  • About Me
Janet and Barry Hoper are partners in the archive and both are retired squadron leaders. Barry has recently retired from work as a relief signaller at Insch to concentrate full time on printing, scanning and maintaining the archive. Janet's administration and accounting skills are put to good use in the 'Treasury' but she also acts as an arts administrator and is a full-time mother to their son Jamie.

The Transport Treasury was started in 1993 after a large accumulation of negatives was acquired from a friend. The Transport Treasury now comprises over 300,000 negatives, mostly railway subjects but with some buses, tractions engines, ships etc. The archive includes work of some well known names such as R C Riley, Dr Ian C Allen, John Robertson, George Heiron, Frank Goudie, Stan Creer, J C Flemons, A E Bennett, Arthur Carpenter, Alec Swain Tony Bennett, Horace Gamble, Roy Vincent, Eric Sawford, inter alia. More material is eagerly sought to build up the archive further for the purpose of providing affordable prints to railway publishers and enthusiasts.

The archive is also open, by appointment, to visitors wishing to surf the unlisted collections for images and in order to research illustrations for articles etc. A number of ex-railwaymen work as volunteers sorting and cataloguing the negatives. As for the future of the collection, it is hoped that Jamie will continue the good work and therefore we keep the archive up to date so it does not get stuck in the steam days. The archive operates with a conventional wet darkroom as well as a digital imaging suite; however, we do not produce duplicate transparencies.
